A key part of the ATA culture is a love of learning, and sharing what we learn. As a student participating in our co-op program or engineering internships, you work alongside ATA team members on current projects. You gain valuable job skills and real-world experience by solving complex engineering problems. Our mentoring programs have been so successful that about 25% of our full-time employees started as co-op students or engineering interns.

Cooperative Learning Program (Co-op)

Are there really co-op opportunities with a company that designs, analyzes, and tests theme park rides, aircraft, launch vehicles, and satellites? Yes!

ATA’s co-op program, which began in 2000, allows university students to work side by side with recognized experts in mechanical engineering disciplines such as acoustics, structural dynamics, modal testing, computational fluid dynamics, and thermal analysis.

As a co-op student, you are involved in ATA’s current projects and encouraged to carry as much of the engineering project challenge as you can handle. Your co-op work session might include one of the following opportunities:

Visiting a customer site for a modal test, and helping ATA test engineers set up accelerometers or shakers for an airplane or satellite
Creating and editing finite element models in order to analyze structures for thermal properties, structural defects, and the effects of vibration or stress
Writing a software program for our internal use, or modifying a software product before it’s released for commercial use
Working in our design studio to help design and build a product prototype

Typically, co-op students complete three to five sessions (i.e., quarters or semesters) at ATA, while enrolled at a university.

HOW TO APPLY

We look for students with proven academic success in the mechanical, aerospace, and structural engineering fields. We welcome students who are enthusiastic about solving difficult mechanical and aerospace structural and design challenges and problems.

Requirements:

Willing to commit to at least three alternating work sessions (quarters or semesters alternating between school and work)
Must be a US Person
Proven academic success in the mechanical, aerospace, and/or structural engineering fields

Compensation (2024):

Entry Level: $22.00–$40.00 per hour
Subsidized Housing (when applicable)
Relocation Assistance (when applicable)

Internship Program

For students interested in engineering internships, ATA offers a summer internship program at its headquarters in San Diego, California, as well as its offices in Los Angeles and Berkeley, California; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; Huntsville, Alabama; Madison, Wisconsin; and Washington, DC. To be eligible for a summer internship, you must have completed your junior year and show proven academic success in the field of mechanical, aerospace, or structural engineering. You also must provide your own housing and be able to work in our office for the entire summer.

Proven academic success in the mechanical, aerospace, and/or structural engineering fields.
B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, or other relevant engineering discipline, OR undergraduate within one year of graduation
Must be a US Person
