San Diego-headquartered ATA Engineering invited to participate in Reuben H. Fleet Science Center panel
SAN DIEGO, Calif., August 23, 2017—On Sunday, July 23, ATA engineer Allison Hutchings shared the podium with Andy Weir, author of the popular science fiction novel The Martian, Dr. Stuart Lee of NASA, comics writer Mike Johnson, health specialist Dr. Sara Gombatto, and science fiction novelist Cindy Pon during a spirited panel discussion on the advancement of science and engineering and how they interact with culture and popular fiction.
Speaking before a crowd of hundreds, the “Science Fiction, Science Future” panel covered ground from the future of automation as computing power advances to the practicalities of interplanetary travel such as NASA’s upcoming Mars 2020 mission, which ATA has been involved with for several years. Other topics included the reciprocal relationship between fiction and science, with authors inspiring real-world advances and real-world science and technology providing fertile ground for stories to explore.
The panel was organized by San Diego’s Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, which aims to bring greater understanding of science, technology, and engineering to lay audiences, and ATA was proud to be able to contribute to the discussion.
